The famous Oceanographic Museum of Monte Carlo was founded by Prince Albert I, the Oceanography Prince, and had been directed for many years by J.Y.Cousteau. The beautiful neoclassical building, which stands right above the seaside on a 80 m high cliff, opened to the public on March 29th 1910. The Museum is also the seat of scientific laboratories for marine environment studies, while many other rooms are open to visitors. An entire floor is dedicated to the famous aquarium with beautiful reconstructions of marine landscapes and an incredible variety of living fishes and tropical corals. Inside the several halls dedicated to oceanography, we can get in touch with submarine exploration history by admiring a rich variety of research boat models, oceanographic tools and instruments, historical boats, submarines, old sounders, great-depth traps, and various beautiful paintings. The museum is completed by a rich library hosting historical documents together with rare and extremely precious books.
