Caran d’Ache, Maison de Haute Ecriture, presents the second treasure in its trilogy of writing instruments and tells the story of one of Switzerland’s most beautiful and best-kept secrets.
Caran d'Ache Limited Edition Secret Journey II Chateaubriand Fountain Pen Broad Nib
Caran d’Ache has found its inspiration by the Lac Léman (Lake Geneva). For the first time it has dedicated a trilogy of unique writing instruments to three major authors who have been secret guests on its shores. In praise of Switzerland and the timeless beauty of the lake, the “Secret Journey” Limited Editions describe the lake shore, seen from three towns in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. But the real journey starts where the secrets are hidden. The “Secret Journey” Limited Editions are technical marvels containing a discreet mechanism that reveals quotations from the writers, together with a precious stone carefully selected to reflect a special characteristic of the author concerned. On the body and cap of the writing instruments, subtly presented old maps will lead anyone who loves rare and valuable objects into the very heart of history.
“Secret Journey II” is the second of three Secret Journey limited edition writing instruments to be unveiled, dedicated to Chateaubriand trace the character of this melancholic yet passionate writer, giving lovers of rare and precious objects a unique glimpse of the Romantic movement during the 19th century. Because he was inspired by the beauty of the shore around the city of Geneva, delicate illustrations of the lake area are finely engraved on the body of the writing instruments, finished in rose gold plate and black lacquer. They contain a secret mechanism: when activated by hand, the “Côte de Genève” decoration, widely used in fine watch making, reveals a hidden quotation from the author as well as a 0.03-carat ruby, the color of passion, symbolically placed on the city of Geneva. “Une de ces belles nuits qu’on croirait que Dieu a faites pour la Suisse seule… (“One of those beautiful nights that God seems to create for Switzerland alone…”).
The “Secret Journey II” writing instruments – 300 fountain pens and 150 rollerball pens are entirely manufactured in the company’s Geneva workshops. Each writing instrument is individually numbered: 1 to 300 for the fountain pens and 1 to 150 for the rollerball pens. The ring is stamped with the hallmark of Caran d’Ache’s master jeweler. The brilliant black lacquer of the body and cap makes an elegant contrast with the rose gold plate that delicately depicts the countryside around the Lake.
The writing block of the fountain pen and the rollerball pen are plated in rose gold and personalized by a guilloche design. The same decoration appears on the piston pump which is plated in rose gold and crowned by a 0.04-carat ruby. The fountain pen can also be used with a Caran d’Ache ink cartridge. Carefully designed to match the writing instruments, the 18-carat gold nibs are finely engraved with the points of the compass. They are available in three widths: Fine, Medium and Broad. The roller pens are fitted with a Caran d’Ache roller point cartridge.
These exclusive pens are presented in a luxurious black lacquer box decorated with a drawing of the Geneva area at the time of Chateaubriand’s visit. The fountain pen is accompanied by a splendid ink bottle in raw glass with a stopper plated in pink gold and engraved with the Caran d’Ache monogram. It contains Blue Night ink, one of the Colors of the Earth Collection by Caran d’Ache, specially chosen to accompany this unique Limited Edition.
